PTA Council Meeting Summary – 9/24/2018

At the Monday, September 24th meeting, Council members welcomed Gilda Ross of the Glenbard Parent Series, a nationally renowned parent education program that helps parents know they are not alone. Please encourage your members to attend these free, yet incredibly valuable, opportunities to learn with other parents in the community. Consider inviting a new friend to join you!

Dr. Paul Gordon shared the success and critical importance of the “Start with Hello” national campaign from Sandy Hook Promise. He shared a heartfelt letter of appreciation from a parent who emphasized the importance of the initiative and the experiences of her child. He encouraged parents and PTAs to spread the word of how important it is to say hello and help everyone feel they belong. He encouraged parents to attend Dr. Julie Causton’s Heartset event on October 10 to learn more about the importance of inclusion.

Construction at Hadley continues with a finish date expected in the Spring. Over the summer, all buildings will get many updates so summer programs may be impacted and the 2019/2018 school year start date could be one week delayed like this year.  Busing continues to be a challenge and the administration is actively working to improve it.

Dr. Gordon also celebrated the start of his 6th year at D41 and that this is the best team of professionals he has worked with over his past 16 years as an educational leader. Individual PARCC scores are in and the District level scores are expected by the end of October.  In order to ‘pass’ the PARCC, districts must hit achievement and growth targets for every subgroup (low income, ELL, etc) and only 5-10% of districts are expected to do so. D41 is awaiting the official results, but early indications are that we met those targets for 2017 and 2018 – an achievement for which we can be very proud of our students, teachers, and staff.

Please consider attending these upcoming events:

  • 9/25 @ 7PM and 9/26 @ Noon – the Yes Brain: The Success Brain, Dr. Bryson
  • 9/26 @ 9:30 AM – No Drama Discipline, Dr. Bryson
  • 9/27 6:30PM – Coffee and Conversation at Churchill with the board, Bruno confirmed
  • 9/27 7:00 League of Women Voters Candidate Forum at Glenbard South
  • 10/10 Heartset with Dr. Julie Causton
  • Fall Candidate Information Session – More information coming soon!

At the next Council meeting, members will welcome Officer Joe of the DARE program, discuss the budget, scholarship program, and memberhub.
