PTA Council Meeting Summary – 12/3/18

At the Monday, December 3rd meeting, PTA Council welcomed Nancy Connelly, District 41 school nurse. Connelly shared ideas for how High-Interest Day (HID) can align with the D41 Allergy Management Plan and Wellness Plan by ensuring committee chairs have consistent timelines and messages for parents about foods and other potential allergens used in HID.  Connelly will continue to work with current HID chairs and building Principals to document and share timelines, checklists, and key communications for HID.

Gordon shared a preview of the Long Range Plan, Year 2 booklet which will soon be mailed to the entire community. He also asked that all parents complete the 5 Essentials Survey as soon as possible, as 20% must participate in order to get a report from the state. Gordon shared a recent PBL at Hadley that is focused on Invisibility and aligned with the “Start with Hello” program. Inspirational speakers included the custodian at Hadley, a D41 toy inventor parent, and a local deaf ninja warrior. All shared stories of gratitude, success, perseverance and overcoming times when they were overlooked or made to feel invisible.

Gordon, Erica Nelson, and Stephanie Clark also responded to questions about recent/upcoming board topics. The academic update will be presented at the 12/3 board meeting and features our best scores yet! PARCC scores place D41 in the top 5% of the state and we celebrated that Lincoln achieved a Summative Designation of Exemplary (top 10%), with the rest of the schools following closely with high scores in the Commendable category. The levy was also discussed in relation to projections for future staffing needs and in regards to the $15M Early Childhood Center mentioned in those projections. Members provided feedback that full-day kindergarten should be part of those discussions.

Construction at Hadley continues to be on schedule, but the early snow means that a temporary roof will have to be utilized as planned. Members asked about traffic patterns with the new bus lane and Gordon clarified that a trained staff member would direct traffic during that brief period of overlap with buses and parent vehicles in the morning.

Members discussed the success of the President’s Roundtable discussions and focus on drama programs and president structures. Members unanimously voted to create a Community Volunteer Liaison chair to coordinate with Glenbard West and other area organization to coordinate volunteer opportunities with D41 students for PTA programs.

Please consider attending Wednesday’s Glenbard Parent Series free event from 7-8:30 at Glenbard East in Lombard. Dr. Peter Hall will discuss Self- Care to Foster Resilience in Your Child and Yourself. Full details here.

At the next Council meeting, members will welcome Laverne Street to the meeting and learn about the work of the Music Education Foundation.
