PTA Council Meeting Summary – 1/29/2018

At the Monday, January 29th meeting, Officer Joe Nemchock of the Glen Ellyn Police Department spoke about the DARE program targeted to All D41 5th grade students. In 2003, the program evolved to its current focus on responsible decision-making (Define Assess Respond Evaluate). Officer Joe meets weekly for an hour with 5th grade classes over a period of eight weeks. Topics include: Tobacco/Alcohol, Risk & Consequences, Peer Pressure, Stress, Communication, Bullying & Internet Safety, and Helping Others. When asked about the biggest issue officers deal with at the High School level, Officer Joe responded that online bullying is a big concern. He suggested restricting access and monitoring activity.

Council members celebrated the success of recent programs and discussed opportunities to adjust practices for sound management at theatre productions, Reflections art program, summer slide programming, and dine out events. Members also learned how D41 is working with the Postmaster to ensure all bulk materials are delivered to the community, monitoring the continuing development of housing behind Center Ice, and responding to the concerns of Wheaton residents opposed to the Hadley bus lane addition due to their concerns regarding bus traffic.

Please encourage members to share their WOW (Warm-Open-Welcoming) moments with the staff by emailing about their experience. Also invite your community to nominate educators/principal/volunteer/youth service leaders via the  IL PTA  by 2/15. The Chamber of Commerce is also accepting nominations for Educator of the Year until 2/16.

As we reflect on the amazing contributions of our members, it’s also time to look ahead to the future PTA Leaders of next year. Nominating committees will be forming at the Council and School levels soon. PTA Leader elections will happen in April/May. Contact your local leaders if you are interested in making a meaningful local impact in D41.

Council members will meet again on Monday, February 26th.
